Drug
Rehab
Drug rehab is the overall term for the process of providing
medical and/or psychotherapeutic treatment for drug
dependencies with substances such as alcohol, prescription
drugs, cocaine, heroin, or amphetamines. The intent
of drug rehab facilities is to make it so that the patient
does not have to be dependent on the substances they
were using and so that they are able to get healthy
enough to avoid the horrible consequences that come
from continuing drug use. Some of the consequences
include, loss of job, relationship problems with family
and friends, and financial problems such as not being
able to pay their bills or afford to eat.
Drug
rehab programs address two different aspects of
drug addiction. These two aspects are physical dependency
and psychological dependency. Ridding patients of
physical dependency involves patients going through
a drug detoxification process. Drug treatment facilities
help patients go through this process and help them
deal with the horrible withdrawal symptoms that can
occur while a person is in drug
rehab. People who are addicted to drugs have built
up a tolerance to the drug and often reel like they
need to take large amounts of the substance in order
to feel “high”. When a patient is in a drug
rehab program, their body goes through an extreme
withdrawal phase that can last weeks or months, depending
on how addicted they were.
Drug
rehab facilities also help patients deal with the
psychological dependency that is associated with drug
use. Many drug dependencies stem from greater, emotional
issues that come from the person’s social and emotional
life. Part of drug rehab is to help sort out these
problems so that people will know how to deal with their
issues in more productive ways.
Drug
rehab programs are great places for people to go
when they are in trouble with drugs. Many rehab centers
specialize in different treatments, but they all have
one goal, to help a patient rid their need for drug
use.
